 Why have standards?

Having an endorsed set of standards creates a benchmark for the practice of Yoga Therapy. As the standards form the basis for AAYT membership and registration as a Yoga Therapist in Australia, they provide guidelines for those considering becoming a Yoga Therapist and those wishing to provide Yoga Therapy training programs.

In a broad-based, contemporary health-care setting in which the public is able to choose from a wide range of traditional, complementary and integrative systems or modalities, it is important that health-care consumers and other health-care providers have confidence in the service offered.

How were the AAYT standards developed?

The AAYT standards were developed by a working party of stakeholders, including experienced Yoga Therapists, senior Yoga teachers, practitioners of allied and complementary health-care and representatives of the Yoga Teachers Association of Australia.

Over a period of nine months, the working party considered the function profile of a Yoga Therapist and the requisite skills and knowledge requirements, In simple terms:
  • what does a Yoga Therapist do?
  • what does she/he need to know?
  • what skills does she/he need to have?
  • what attributes are desirable?
  • what training is required?

Following the development of a draft, others stakeholders and appropriately qualified and interested people were invited to provide comments, leading to the final draft which was then enndorsed by the membership of the Association in November 2008. A revised version was subsequently endorsed in October 2010.
